It’s America’s birthday. What did we get?
Pursuit of property.
Pursuit of happiness.
A Constitution establishing the rule of law.
Civility among our governors.
An ever-expanding franchise of democracy.
Peaceful exchange of power.
Unity and civility.
Opportunity to share our gifts.
Friendship of similar minds around the world.
“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” — from “The New Colossus”, by Emma Lazarus.
We offer that light to people everywhere.
Selfish people will try to divide us for profit.
We are not divided. We are a civilization of neighbors motivated by generosity.
Today reminds us how much we mean to each other.
This is the greatest gift of all.
